Trigger point injections are game changers for many of our patients in our Littleton chiropractic office, but what exactly is a trigger point injection?
What Is A Trigger Point Injection?
A trigger point injection is an injection that helps reduce inflammation, pain, and improve mobility of your muscles. We accomplish this with a combination of lidocaine, which helps to numb the area and reduce pain as well as Sarapin, a natural, plant-based anti-inflammatory. For patients who are in severe pain we can also add a third medication called Toradol, which is a stronger anti-inflammatory.
What Are The Most Common Trigger Point Injection Sites?
Trigger points can be found all throughout the body. We usually say that wherever you have a muscle we can inject; however, the most common places of trigger point injections are in the back, shoulders, and neck. Our Littleton chiropractors office can also do soft tissue injections, which are very similar to trigger point injections. Trigger point injections can also help pain associated with plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel.
Trigger Point Injections For The Back
Trigger point injections in the back are the most common location. We can inject anywhere from the upper back near the neck all the way down to the lower back and into the glutes.
Trigger Point Injection Neck
We absolutely do trigger point injections in the neck, and we have been doing an increasing more in the neck since people have gone remote and are working on their computers more (“Tech Neck” has become more common). We can also inject the neck for reasons such as HAs/migraines, whiplash, or from simply sleeping on the neck wrong.
Trigger Point Injection For Sciatica
Placing trigger point injections in the lower back and glutes can help with sciatic pain. We typically like to start with these injections to see if it helps; if the pain is not relieved or if there is minimal relief, a large joint injection directly into the sciatic joint (lower back) is an incredibly effective option for sciatica relief.
Trigger Point Injection TMJ
We absolutely provide trigger point injections for TMJ. These injections involve three different injection points surrounding the jaw and ear affected, which help relieve TMJ pain along with headaches, and help you get a better night’s sleep. TMJ pain affects up to 12% of the population and affects women much more than men.
How Long Do Trigger Point Injections Last?
The pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects of the injections typically last 24-48 hours. We encourage patients to get them twice/week for the first four weeks of treatment, and then once a week or as needed.
Does Insurance Cover Trigger Point Injections?
Most insurance companies cover trigger point injections, but the number of injections covered can vary. If the injections are not covered they cost $50 out of pocket and $60 if a patient would like the additional add-in of Toradol.
